Creative Ministry Toolbox: HootSuite

TCP-CMT-HootSuite

Creative Ministry Toolbox is a new, weekly segment that highlights one of our favorite tools that we use in the creative department of our church. Have a resource worth sharing? Let us know in the comments below!

Social media is more important today than it has ever been before. Why? Because it’s where people are spending their time. We should always seek to meet people where they are, just as Jesus demonstrated during His time on Earth. Social media provides a place outside of our church walls to speak into the lives of those around us. It’s not just fun and games—there is real opportunity for ministry here.

Because social media is social, it’s not enough to simply set up a Facebook and Twitter profile without regularly using them. That’s the online equivalent to a vacant church building.

To do social media right, you must be persistent. Consistency both builds an online audience and communicates faithfulness to your followers. Your Facebook posts and tweets should regularly appear on your followers’ feeds. In our digital culture, if they’re not seeing you online, you’re not a part of their everyday lives.

So, how do you manage all of this without pulling your hair out? HootSuite. If there is one tool that I’d recommend to anyone who wants to up their social media game, this is it.

Here are three reasons why I’d recommend it for any church:

1. Scheduled Posts Are Your New Best Friend

Your time is not best spent on Facebook or Twitter all day. In fact, it’s a surefire way to kill your productivity. With HootSuite, you can schedule your posts ahead of time to deliver at the most popular times for your audience. (For our church, mornings and evenings seem to work best.)

2. You Can Manage Multiple Networks In One Place

Jumping back and forth from multiple networks can be time consuming and just plain annoying. With HootSuite, you can both post and monitor all of your social activity in one place. You’re even able to keep an eye on trends by adding streams of hashtags. For example, we monitor whenever someone uses our city (#Greensboro) and our main church hashtag (#GodLovesGreensboro).

3. You Can’t Beat The Price

With their free package, you’re able to manage up to five social accounts. This is more than enough for churches to get started. While their biggest competition, Buffer, also has a free plan, you’re able to do much more with HootSuite. After spending time on both platforms, we discovered HootSuite was best for our ministry context.

TCP Tip: Some churches have linked their Facebook and Twitter profiles so that when you post to one, it automatically posts to the other. (This can be done from either network.) Be sure to turn this feature off before using HootSuite to avoid double posts.

Have you ever tried HootSuite? Let us know in the comments below!
